Recognize and Address Child Neglect and Abuse

Signs of Child Abuse/Neglect include:
1. Unexplained injuries
2. Changes in behavior.
3. Returning to earlier behaviors
4. Fear of going home.
5. Changes in eating
6. Changes in sleeping
7. Changes in school performance and attendance
8. Lack of personal care or hygiene
9. Risk-taking behaviors
10. Inappropriate sexual behaviors

If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, you can help! Reassure and support the child and report it to your local or state child protective service agency, or to your neighborhood police precinct.

Approximately 1 in 10 children suffer from child maltreatment and 1 in 16 children suffer from sexual abuse.
In a study of young adults who suffered child abuse or neglect, 80% met criteria for at least one psychiatric disorder by age 21, including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and suicide attempts.
